  2. You need at least 3 perfumes with ratings or marked as favorites to generate your thread
  3. The chart automatically loads and displays your top 20 notes

Understanding the Chart

The mobile Scent Thread displays a horizontal bar chart showing your most common fragrance notes:

  • Horizontal bars: Each bar represents a fragrance note
  • Bar length: Shows how frequently that note appears in your collection
  • Top 20 notes: Only the most common notes are displayed for clarity
  • Color coding: Bars use a gradient from peach to lighter shades
  • Frequency labels: Numbers on the right show exact counts

Interacting with the Chart

  • Scroll horizontally: Swipe left and right to see all notes
  • Touch-optimized: The chart is designed for touch interaction with proper spacing
  • Tap bars: Some chart views allow tapping bars for more details
  • Smooth scrolling: The chart supports momentum scrolling for smooth navigation

💡 Getting the Best Results:

  • Rate or favorite at least 10-15 perfumes for more accurate insights
  • The more wears you log, the more defined your thread becomes
  • Check the chart regularly as your collection grows
  • Use the insights to discover new perfumes that match your preferences

How do I add perfumes to my collection?

There are two ways to add perfumes:

Search & Add: Click "Add Perfume" in the header or on your collection page. Search our database of thousands of fragrances and add them to your collection with one click.
Import Collection: Copy and paste your perfume list from any source. We'll automatically match and add them to your collection. (Parfumo is Copy & Paste only.)

How do I log when I wear a perfume?

To log a wear:

  1. Navigate to a perfume in your collection
  2. Click the "Log Wear" button
  3. Select the date and time you wore it
  4. Choose your mood before wearing (required)
  5. Rate the perfume (1-5 stars, required)
  6. Optionally add notes, mood after wearing, and performance details (longevity & sillage)
  7. Save to add it to your wear history

The more you log, the better insights you'll get about your scent preferences and patterns! Logging mood after wearing and performance details unlocks additional insights like mood journey tracking and performance-based recommendations.

What is the collection import feature?

The import feature allows you to quickly add multiple perfumes at once. You can import from Fragrantica, Basenotes, or paste any text list. Parfumo is supported via Copy & Paste only.

To use it:

  1. Visit the Import page
  2. Choose your import method:
    • Fragrantica: Enter your profile URL (e.g., https://www.fragrantica.com/member/967803)
    • Basenotes: Enter your profile URL
    • Parfumo: Use Copy & Paste (manual list)
    • Manual: Paste your list (one perfume per line)
  3. Review the matched perfumes on the selection screen
  4. Search, filter, or deselect any perfumes you don't want
  5. Click "Add selected perfumes" to finish

Tips:

  • For Fragrantica, you can import both "Have" and "Want" lists
  • Manual lists work best formatted as "Brand Name" or "Brand - Perfume Name"
  • Example: "Chanel Coco Mademoiselle" or "Dior - Sauvage"
  • You can always edit your collection after importing

How does mood tracking work?

When logging a wear, you can select mood emojis that represent how you felt before and after wearing the perfume. This helps you discover patterns like:

  • Which perfumes lift your mood
  • What fragrances you reach for when you're feeling certain emotions
  • How different scent families affect your emotional state
  • Which perfumes become favorites for specific contexts

Over time, these patterns help you make more intentional fragrance choices based on how you want to feel. Logging your mood after wearing (optional) unlocks mood journey insights that show which perfumes consistently improve your emotional state.

How do recommendations work now?

Our intelligent recommendation system uses data-driven scoring that gets smarter with every wear log. Recommendations are personalized based on:

  • Your ratings: Perfumes similar to ones you've rated highly get prioritized
  • Mood success: Perfumes that consistently improve your mood score higher
  • Performance preferences: Longevity and sillage patterns learned from your wear logs
  • Temporal patterns: Notes and families you prefer at different times of day
  • Scientific validation: Research-backed mood effects (shown with 🔬 icon)

The system uses a hybrid approach: 80% weight on your personal data and 20% on scientific validation. Your actual experience always takes precedence over research findings.

What makes a recommendation "high confidence"?

Confidence levels are calculated using a multi-factor formula that considers:

  • Wear count (40%): More wears logged = higher confidence (saturates at 20 wears)
  • Rating consistency (30%): Consistent ratings indicate reliable preferences
  • Mood success rate (20%): Higher success rate in mood improvements = higher confidence
  • Context coverage (10%): Worn in multiple contexts (work, date, casual) increases confidence

Confidence Levels:

  • High (≥70%): Green border - Strong data backing the recommendation
  • Medium (40-69%): Yellow border - Good data, but could improve with more wears
  • Low (<40%): Gray border - Limited data, recommendations improve as you log more

Hover over the match percentage on any recommendation card to see the detailed confidence breakdown.

Why do some recommendations have a science icon (🔬)?

The science icon (🔬) appears when research-backed evidence supports the recommendation. Our system integrates scientific data from studies on:

  • EEG effects: How scents affect brain wave patterns (alpha, theta, beta waves)
  • Psychophysiological effects: Anxiety reduction, mood lift, cognitive performance
  • Chemical components: Plant materials and their known effects

Important: Scientific data is informational and educational. Your personal experience always takes precedence - if you feel energized by lavender but research says it's calming, we trust your unique biology and use your personal data for scoring.

Hover over the 🔬 icon to see research details, or visit the perfume detail page for a full breakdown of scientific backing.

What are "forgotten gems"?

Forgotten gems are perfumes in your collection that you haven't worn recently but might want to rediscover. The system identifies three types:

  • High-rated gems: Perfumes you rated 4+ stars but haven't worn in 30+ days
  • Serendipity gems: Any perfume not worn in 45+ days that fits your current mood/weather/occasion
  • Never-worn bottles: Perfumes in your collection you've never logged, but match your current context

Forgotten gems appear in a rotating banner at the top of the recommendations page and in a dedicated "Rediscover Your Favorites" section. Click any gem to log a wear or explore the perfume details.

How does the system learn from my wear logs?

The system learns from every wear log through two mechanisms:

Immediate Updates (Real-time):
  • Ratings update your note and family preferences instantly
  • Mood transformations update mood success rates immediately
  • Performance data (longevity/sillage) updates your preferences by context
  • Next recommendation fetch uses the updated data
Batch Processing (Daily):
  • Complex patterns like trending notes and seasonal preferences calculated daily
  • Forgotten gems identified and updated
  • Insights cached for fast loading (30-day expiration)

The more you log, the smarter recommendations become. Even with just 3 wears, you'll start seeing basic patterns. At 25+ wears, you'll unlock high-confidence recommendations with full personalization.

What is moodAfter and why should I log it?

moodAfter is an optional field in Step 3 of the wear log modal that lets you track how your mood changed after wearing the perfume.

Logging moodAfter unlocks powerful insights:

  • Mood Journey Tracker: See which perfumes consistently improve your mood (e.g., "Made you feel calm 5/5 times")
  • Success Rate Calculation: System learns which perfumes create positive mood shifts
  • Personalized Reasons: Recommendations include mood journey data ("Made you feel calm last time")

While optional, logging moodAfter significantly improves recommendation accuracy. The system considers any positive mood change (moodAfter more positive than moodBefore) as a success.

What are longevity and sillage?

Longevity and sillage are performance metrics you can optionally track when logging a wear:

Longevity (1-5 scale):
  • 1: Less than 2 hours
  • 2: 2-4 hours
  • 3: 4-6 hours
  • 4: 6-8 hours
  • 5: More than 8 hours
Sillage (1-5 scale):
  • 1: Skin scent (only you can smell it)
  • 2: Close (arm's length)
  • 3: Arm's length
  • 4: Room-filling
  • 5: Room-filling projection

These fields are optional and hidden in an expandable section. Logging performance data helps the system learn your preferences (e.g., "You prefer long-lasting perfumes for work") and will be used for performance-based matching in future updates.

Do I have to log performance details?

No, performance details (longevity and sillage) are completely optional. The wear log modal works perfectly without them.

However, logging performance data helps unlock:

  • Performance-based recommendations (coming in Phase 4)
  • Context-aware matching (e.g., "Lasts 8+ hours like you prefer for work")
  • Personal insights showing your performance preferences by context

The performance section is collapsed by default - expand it only if you want to track these details. Your wear log is complete with just mood and rating!

What are "personal insights"?

Personal insights show what the system has learned about your taste patterns. The insights panel displays:

  • Top-Rated Notes: Notes with 4+ star average, sorted by rating (e.g., "Bergamot: 4.8 avg from 12 wears")
  • Favorite Families by Context: Top family per occasion with usage % and avg rating (e.g., "Work: Woody (85% of work wears, 4.5 avg)")
  • Performance Preferences: Average longevity/sillage by context (if 10+ wears with performance data)
  • Temporal Patterns: Time-of-day or day-of-week preferences (if >60% consistency)

Insights appear on the recommendations page in a collapsible panel. Click any insight to auto-fill the recommendation selector with that context and see matching perfumes.

What is the "mood journey tracker"?

The mood journey tracker shows which perfumes create emotional transformations. It displays mood transformation cards grouped by outcome:

  • Calming: Perfumes that shift you from stressed/anxious to relaxed
  • Energizing: Perfumes that boost your energy and mood
  • Confidence-boosting: Perfumes that make you feel more confident

Each card shows:

  • Perfume name and image
  • Mood transformation (e.g., 😰 → 😌)
  • Success rate (e.g., "4/5 times successful, 80%")

Success is calculated as any positive mood change (moodAfter more positive than moodBefore). Click a transformation card to filter recommendations by that mood effect.

What does "trending" mean?

The trending section shows usage pattern shifts by comparing your last 7 days to your rolling 30-day average.

Trends are shown only when there's a significant change (>25% increase or decrease), such as:

  • "Wearing citrus 40% more this week"
  • "Woody scents down 30% lately"

The system requires at least 5 wears in the last 30 days to calculate trends. Only the top 3 trends (by absolute change) are displayed. This helps you notice seasonal shifts, mood changes, or new preferences emerging.

What are "patterns learned"?

Patterns learned are insights the system has discovered from your wear logs, including:

  • Note preferences: Which notes you consistently rate highly (3+ wears required)
  • Family affinities: Which scent families you prefer (3+ wears required)
  • Mood correlations: Which perfumes create successful mood improvements (5+ mood logs required)
  • Temporal patterns: Time-of-day or day-of-week preferences (5+ wears required)

The learning progress banner shows your total pattern count (e.g., "23 patterns learned from 47 wears"). More patterns = smarter recommendations!

How do I unlock new insights?

New insights unlock as you log more wears through gamified milestones:

  • 3 wears: Basic taste patterns unlock (Personal Insights Panel)
  • 10 wears: Mood Journey Insights unlock (Mood Journey Tracker)
  • 25 wears: High confidence recommendations, full algorithmic personalization
  • 50 wears: Advanced insights (seasonal trends, performance profiles)

When you cross a milestone, you'll see a celebration modal explaining what you've unlocked. The learning progress banner at the top of the recommendations page shows your progress toward the next milestone.

What is "confidence level"?

Confidence level indicates how well the system knows your preferences based on data quantity and quality:

H
High Confidence: 25+ wears logged, consistent patterns detected, reliable recommendations
M
Medium Confidence: 10-24 wears logged, some patterns emerging, good recommendations
L
Low Confidence: 0-9 wears logged, limited data, recommendations improve as you log more

Confidence level is displayed in the Learning Progress Banner and affects recommendation confidence scores. Higher confidence = more reliable, personalized recommendations.
